Is the Nikon D90 really that much better than the D60?

I currently own a Nikon N90 (not digital) and have been looking at digital. I want to stick with Nikon since it seems my lenses will crossover. But there are so many models. I have a canon elph 800 but the pix just aren't the quality I want. What model will take comparable pix to my N90?

The D90 is a much better camera than the D60. It is an advanced amateur camera while the D60 is an entry level model. The D90 is better built, shoots video as well as stills and has other more advanced features. That said you would never notice the difference in a print.

If money is an issue the D60 is a fine choice. If you want something that shoots video but is a bit cheaper try the new D5000. Cost is about $850 with a lens. You will want a new lens with whatever camera you buy. The reason is that since the D90 and D60 use a sensor that is smaller than 35mm film there is a crop factor. This crop factor is 1.5x and will make your lenses perform like they were 1.5x longer than they really are. For example a 100mm lens would perform like a 150mm lens would on your N90. This is good for telephoto lenses as it gives you more reach. Wide angle lenses on the other hand are no longer very wide. So the kit lens that usually comes with all of these cameras starts at 18mm instead of 28mm like the film camera lenses did.

The other thing to consider is what type of lenses you have with your N90. If they are AFs lenses then it wont matter what camera you choose. If they are not then they will not autofocus on the D60 or D5000. These cameras do not have a built in focus motor. Instead they rely on lenses that have a built in motor. The D90 and above all have motors built into the body so they can use older lenses. If you have a significant investment in non AFs lenses then I would buy the D90.
