Buddhism bracelet for protection or? Anyone knows about this? Help.?

I'm a non-buddhist. But my partner is. He wears the buddhist beads bracelet. And the beads or jade, I'm not sure is dark purple (almost black) in color. It broke twice. What does it mean? And may I know, what is the purpose of the bracelet. Cos he refuse to answer me when I asked him about it and also when it broke.

It means The Buddha is rolling in his grave that his teachings have come to this.
