The Amethyst is a type of purple quartz often used as an ornamental stone in jewelry. Amethyst derives from the Greek word "a" sense and not "methustos" which means drunk. It is a basis for the belief that the gemstone protects the owner from being drunk or sober. Ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking cups in the belief that would prevent them from being intoxicated.
The Amethyst is a type of purple quartz. During the 20th century, amethyst was shown to be caused by the presence of manganese. Since it is capable of being changed and discharged by heat, the color was believed by some researchers to come from an organic source.
