What is the process to refine onyx (the gemstone)? (10 pts for best answer)?

Can anyone give me the link to find out how onyx is refined? I'm doing a science project, and there's a lot less information on onyx than I had originally thought

Onyx is the trade name for black, crypto-crystalline quartz, the same basic mineral as composes agate and jasper etc. It is mined in the form it is used (other than cutting, of course) and is not refined in any way.
A large percentage of "onyx" on sale today is, in fact, grey agate that is artificially dyed black by soaking in warm sugar solution for some weeks and is then soaked in sulphuric acid which breaks the sugar down leaving black carbon deposited in the minute spaces between the crystallites making the material appear black all over.
