Cultured pearls are cultivated in pearl farms, where several thousand oysters can be nucleated and care during the 2-5 years required for development of a pearl. Like any other form of agriculture, farming pearl is so dependent on luck as it is in the skill. An entire bed of oysters can be completely torn as unpredictable and uncontrollable factors such as pollution water, storms, excessive heat or cold, disease, and many other forces of both man and nature. Although pearl farmers attempt to control as many of these variables as possible, pearl farming may in fact be a risky business!
Before the farmer can even begin to start nucleating oysters the process of pearl production, must have oysters for nuclear. In the early days of the cultured pearl industry, the oysters were simply collected from the sea. While some farmers this method still used today, the modern practice is essentially the race of oysters. The farmer collects the pearl oyster sperm and egg quality and oysters on the farm, and then uses the sperm to fertilize eggs and create a new generation of oyster larvae.
Larvae were allowed to float freely in the water under controlled conditions until it or a similar object at this point in its development.) During a period of few months, the larvae develop into baby oysters. Then generally moved in a separate nursery, "" area of the farm, where they are cared for perhaps 1-2 years, until they have grown enough to be nucleated.
The nucleation process is a surgical procedure by which a foreign body is implanted in the oyster. This object causes irritation, that the oyster counters by secreting nacre around the object, producing a pearl. Two basic methods are used for nucleation.
Saltwater oysters are generally nucleated using a "bead" prepared from mother-of-pearl. The first account is surrounded by a small piece of mantle tissue taken from a donor oyster, and then the heel and weaving together are implanted into the oyster. The account serves as a mold, or core, around which the pearl develops. The resulting pearl contain the account in its center (in the account can be detected by X-rays), and the pearl will tend to develop in the same general shape as the original account.
Freshwater mollusks are generally nucleated using a piece of mantle tissue only, without a drop. The pearl develops around the mantle tissue, which can deteriorate over time, leaving a pearl that is made almost entirely of nacre.
After nucleation, the oysters are provided several weeks to recover from surgery. During this time, some of the oysters may reject and expel the nuclei of implantation, others may get sick or even die. Most, however, recover completely. The oysters are placed in cages or nets and moved to the oyster bed, where he would lie like pearls develop. Depending on the type of oyster, this process may require anywhere from a few extra months to several years!
All the time that the pearls are developing within oysters, pearl farmers pay close attention to water conditions, weather and other factors that may influence both the health of the oyster and the development of the pearl. Several oysters, for example, require different levels of water temperature to thrive and produce the best pearls. Farmers tend to raise or lower the cages of oysters in the water to help control temperature - reducing the cages to the cooler depths when the weather is warm, or increase them closer to the surface of heat when the weather is cool. The cages have fallen in storms, so keep the oysters as safe as possible from the turbulence of the surface. Water pollution is also a constant concern, pearl farmers take numerous steps to ensure the cleanliness of water in their living oysters.
After the pearls have been allowed fully developed, should be harvested. The pearls are extracted from the oysters, then washed, dried, and sorted into general categories. Sometimes the pearls are polished by falling into the salt and water. The pearls are then sold to jewelers, manufacturers and distributors of pearls.
