The Silk Routes were important in ancient times because they:

The Mount of Beatitudes (also known as Mount eremos) is a large hill in northern Israel (also known as the Holy Land). Said to be the place where Jesus gave his most famous teaching, the Sermon on the Mount. It is also believed that Jesus chose his twelve disciples on this site.
The Mount of Beatitudes is on the north west coast of the Sea of Galilee, between the settlements of Capernaum and Galilee, about 100 miles from Jerusalem.
The site (which has been celebrated as the place where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount for more than 1600 years) is the name of a section of sermon, as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew (and partially in the Gospel of St. Luke and the Dead Sea Scrolls). In this section, known as the Beatitudes, Christ describes the merits of living in the kingdom of the heavens and the ways in which each group is, or will be blessed. No mention of any particular individual, but the Beatitudes indicate the specific characteristics necessary to enter the eternal kingdom of heaven.
The characteristics possessed by each group shall enter Heaven more features not usually seen as a blessing. The theologians have suggested that the meaning of this is that generally not considered blessed in Earth will be in the kingdom of heaven. Generally not considered eight beatitudes.
The Beatitudes (according to the Gospel of Matthew) as follows:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn,
they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek
for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
because they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful
For they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers
They shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for the sake of justice,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "

Today, a Byzantine church stands on the Mount of the Beatitudes. The church was erected in 1938 by Franciscan Catholic sisters and was funded in part by the infamous Italian leader Mussolini. The chapel was designed by a renowned architect of the time, Antonio Barluzzi.
The octagonal church design. Each side represents one of the eight Beatitudes. In front of the chapel, six sizes of paving represent justice, prudence, fortitude, charity, faith and temperance.
Inside the chapel, visitors can see the layer of Pope Paul VI, which hangs from one wall and presented to the church in official state visit of the Pope in 1964.
