Does sterling silver jewelry ever tarnish?
I am looking for nice gifts for my wedding to give out and I came across some very nice sterling silver jewelry. I was looking for white gold and saw some items that were sterling silver and I was just wondering if over time they (ster.silv.) will tarnish.
Un-plated sterling (.925) silver will tarnish.
The proper term for this oxidization is a patina.
People who prefer sterling actually want that darkening to occur and value silver that has that look.
I'm a jeweler and my main line of work is repairs to the trade (I repair jewelry for jewelry stores that don't have a jeweler on premises and for large department stores.)
Lately there's been a lot of imported silver jewelry that is "dipped" (electroplated) with nickel to prevent tarnish.
Many stores will tell you their silver is rhodium plated, but there are technical reasons why one simply cannot rhodium plate silver without first plating it in some other metal...usually nickel. And rhodium plating is quite expensive as well.
From a repair POV this nickel plated silver is garbage! It cannot be properly polished, it certainly can't be soldered on, and so ring sizing's are impossible. But it doesn't tarnish in the case so jewelry stores like it.
I think it looks like chrome plated car parts.
