Great horse at home but at shows?
I have been training an off the track thoroughbred for 6 month or so now and she is soo great at home.
She is a wonderful tall pretty hunter horse at home.
She goes in frame, trots nice and extened, head set is nice and level, stops and stands all of that great stuff. I ride on a loose rein in all too.
But when I get to a show she just looses it all.
She is ok until other horses start passing her and then her head goes up, I have to hold her back and she runs around the ring at a canter.
She wont stand in the ring at all and I cant even get on her, she runs and runs and its just so crazy!
I have to school her through all the classes and showmanship, she will not stand on the rail.
Im so frustrated because she is so good at my house, and I know she can do it.
Does anyone have any experience with this and can offer a little in put?
She is such a sweet mare and I love her to death but really she drives me nuts at shows.
Like everyone else said, this is really typical for a OTTB.
Get your horse away from home as much as possible, take her to a ton of local open shows, and ride her like you would at home, don't worry about placing, you will have to blow a bunch of classes at first. Get to the show early, and lunge her in the arena for a while before the show starts. Giving your horse a calming suppliment like Caml & Cool could help take off some of her energy, and make her focus more.
In your classes, when she takes off at the canter, immeditly make her come down to the gait you want her to be going, if you can't get her to slow down useing your normal commands, pull her into a small circle (not so small that she will come off balance and fall, but a small enough circle that she can't continue her fast pace).
When you ride at home, try and ride with a few different people to get your horse used to other horses passing her, ask people to purposly pass you close by, and ride next to you. See if you can haul your horse to a friends to ride a couple times a week, the more your horse gets ridden in a new place, the better.

English riding is divided into a variety of disciplines or styles or riding. From pleasure riding to competitive events, each of these disciplines is unique and has its own set of priorities and requirements. One of the most common disciplines in North America is the hunters.
Once the hunters are based on the sport of fox hunting. Several horses and riders would follow the hounds across the country to hunt foxes. While the sport is alive and well, the hunter modern show is a completely different kind of horse.
The hunters first animals are solid, suitable for ring and the fields. It was praised for its versatility and athletic ability. A good hunter is expected to be calm and manageable, however, be athletic enough to be around a series of jumps without undue stress to the horse or rider.
As time passed judges began placing the finest, smartest animals in the classes than the old style-often less flashy horses that is better suited to racing across uneven fields in hunting foxes. Thoroughbred and thoroughbred crosses became popular in the ring because of their lighter build, step length and athletic ability. Soon the hunter ring was filled with bay thoroughbreds and the heavier type was rare field hunter Once seen.
Horses are generally solid modern hunters, who are refined, but still have substance. They are prized for their long movement, under the knee action as possible. With three clean gaits and a long, relaxed transport appear to be soft, relaxing horse to ride.
So what is a hunter show exactly? A hunter division is divided into four classes, three over fences and one on the floor. There are specific divisions for children of various age ranges, for ponies of different heights, for green or experienced horses, for amateur riders and professional riders. Each division is set to a specific height that is designed to accommodate the planned capacity level of horse and rider.
Over fences the horse is judged on a right track even going with effortless jumping ability that does not throw the rider out of the chair. The horse is expected to canter the course with an even 12 'stride (slightly shorter for ponies). The horse should not speed up or withdraw from the falls, as it approaches them. Each jump is judged individually on the horse's style, as it passes the jump. Ideally that the horse should go with a nice bascule that uses the horse and the horse arches over the fence in a nice, smooth line. With tight knees that are still in front the horse should stretch its head and neck over the fence bringing your knees toward your chin. The hindquarters should follow smoothly with tight hocks and form without undue effort. The observers should have the impression that the whole performance is effortless.
Between the fences the horse should be calm and relaxed. Active should be done with wide, smooth corners. Speed is not a priority, so the softer, more even way of always being on a fast, choppy ride. The ideal transport of the horse varies from judge to judge, but in general the horse should be long and relaxed with the head slightly above the vertical so they can see ahead of himself to approach the fences.
The courses are designed in a combination of straight lines, bent lines, single jumps and diagonal. The overall plan is very simple and easy for the horse and rider to follow. Looking breaks themselves are generally painted in natural colors and are designed to look like things you can find when traveling in the fields.
On the flat, the horses are judged on the quality of their movement, which should be long and low, with little knee action. If the horse has a little "float" in its path will attract the attention of the judge. Transitions should be smooth and immediately. At no point should it look as if the horse is giving its rider a hard time, nor the pilot show signs of difficulty in walking. While the riding is not a priority, a rider who can "sit pretty" will show a horse to better advantage in comparison with a careless rider, but effective.
While people ridicule show hunters as boring and easy, there's a lot of training and riding skill to be a top hunter. Admittedly hunter jumping is not as difficult as trying to jump or the jumper ring, but a truly excellent hunter has just as much talent as a top jumper.
Showing in the Hunter ring is a great way for riders to start in the showbiz world of horses. By creating good habits on the fences and on the floor on both horses and riders to establish a solid basis for more vigorous competition in the long term. This is a great discipline for riders with problems much less confidence level divisions available.
The show hunter ring is very competitive and can be a great direction to focus their skills riding. While higher levels can be very expensive, lower levels can enjoy almost any horse and rider just about any English.
