Thomas Chippendale didn’t grow up in London (in fact he was born in Leeds in 1718), but he did move to London at the age of 31, after he had already gained recognition as a premiere furniture maker and cabinetry-focused interior designer. His work and styles influenced the London Interior Design community then, and the Chippendale aesthetic continues to extend its impact well beyond London even today.

Chippendale’s fluent, natural and sophisticated style developed after the promotion of his furniture and interior designs in “The Gentleman and the Cabinetmaker’s Director” in 1754. Chippendale continued to make iconic contributions to the field of interior design until 1790. His furniture came to be manufactured as far afield as Philadelphia in the USA.

Chippendale drew on three key interior design inspirations for this work – namely French, Asian and Goth. In the USA, Chippendale’s work was interpreted as a re-envisionment of the Queen Anne interior design style. His furniture was often heavily ornamentalised on the feet and uppers, with beautiful heritage-inspired scroll tops on taller units. Yellow Birch and Mahogany were often used, undersupport was rarely employed, and the rears of seated furniture were covered with plush fabric or otherwise left as shaped wood, perhaps as tessellated piecework with ornamental sculpting and Asia-inspired cross-strips. To round out his own personal interior design style, Chippendale would also include delightful finials and varnished shellac features.

Enthusiasts and professionals alike were very taken with Chippendale’s work, lauding him as a master London cabinetmaker and a household name of eighteenth-century furniture-focused interior design.

Harewood House is a popular Leeds tourist attraction, located about 4 hours’ drive from Central London. The famous building features a magnificent collection of Chippendale library furniture that was originally ordered during the 1760s. The winter of 2008-2009 I ran into a elderly man in public and commented on the vehicle he was driving. He was driving a 1973 full size Oldsmobile station wagon that really shouldn’t have been on the road. It had sagging suspension and was blowing blue smoke and the body was rusted out. My initial contact wasn’t rude at all. I simply said “Wow, I haven’t seen one of these in a while”. This drew the man toward me with a smile and the willingness to talk.

He clearly admitted it was old and needed replacing, but he was having trouble finding a replacement because the auto makers don’t make these station wagons anymore. He stated his wagon had a 455 under the hood for pulling his motor boat and he could haul his gear in the back. As soon as I heard the engine size come out of his mouth, I silently felt sorry for him because this vehicle has to be breaking his bank book.

I told him “station wagons are still being made by many auto makers, … they just look different from your wagon”. He gave me a silent look in confusion. I went on to explain that today’s wagons are referred to as S.U.V.’s. He generated a perky interested look. I explained further that they come in different sizes depending upon what you need. There are big ones like the Chevrolet Suburban or Ford Excursion. Then there are the smaller ones like the S-10 Blazer or the Chevrolet Trail Blazer or Ford Explorer. If you wanted something in-between, there are models like the Ford Expedition or the Chevrolet Tahoe. I clearly had his full attention now.

He walked me over to his wagon and opened the rear door as he said “look at all the room a wagon has when you fold the rear seat down”. then we walked to the side doors of his wagon as he pointed out the vehicle options saying the wagons come fully loaded with power windows and locks, they also have air conditioning and am-fm stereo’s.

I realized I was talking to a sweet old man who was locked in time and had no current knowledge of the automobiles that are out there.

I asked him to come look at mine. I opened the rear door of my S.U.V. and his eyes caught the interior immediately. I showed him I have fold down rear seats too, … and with them folded down, I had just as much room as his 1973 wagon. I further showed him that the interior was finished out with a very clean luxury look, the rear floor was carpeted. I then allowed him to sit in the drivers seat as I pointed out the power windows, locks, seats, air conditioning, and full service stereo system, … all of which were standard equipment on a lot of today’s vehicles.

The man paused a little bit as he looked over other things like my electric side mirrors, the digital compass built into my rear view mirror, the four wheel drive control, and the fact that I had two glove boxes with even more storage on the door panels. He looked up at me and said “the insides certainly don’t look like trucks do they? They‘re dressed out like Cadillac’s”. I responded “yes sir, these are today’s version’s of the station wagons”.

He got out of the vehicle and I popped my hood as I said “You mentioned you had a 455 under your hood, now days that is unheard of. That 455 has to be killing you at the gas pump”. I showed him the S.U.V.’s come with different motors such as a small V-8, and many come with V-6 engines, … they are all capable of pulling a motor boat. I further explained not all of these are four wheel drive, but it sure is nice to have in Wisconsin because of our winters, and summer high water conditions. I also pointed out that these S.U.V.’s come in two door models as well as 4 door models.

I told him another nice thing about the S.U.V. is the fact that they are safer in the fact that they allow the driver to sit a little higher, giving the ability to see over small vehicles and some snow banks.

After we talked about vehicles, we spent about 15 minutes talking about the weather and America’s economic troubles before saying goodbye and going our own ways. One thing is for sure, … on my drive home, I thought about the glow in this man’s face as I educated him on the S.U.V. (today’s station wagons). I strongly feel I did him a great justice by having the conversation we had about these vehicles. I now also believe that if he does choose to upgrade his vehicle, … he may now consider a S.U.V.

Commodities so far this week have not changed much. But I can point out a few things for us to watch Thursday and Friday.

Precious Metals – Gold GLD fund – Silver SLV Fund – PM Stocks GDX Fund

We could start to see a shift between the price relationship between gold and the broad market. I pointed this out last week mentioning that gold and silver are starting to hold up in value while stocks sell off on big days. For example, Wednesday’s sell-off in equities did not have much effect on precious metals. This is what we want to see. It means money is moving out of stocks and into gold and silver bullion as a safe haven.

These three charts of GLD, SLV and GDX show Wednesday’s price action as gold and silver moved higher while precious metal stocks sold down with the rest of the market. This is generally a bearish indicator for gold and silver but because I am starting to see this happen more often and traders are ready for the market to top any day, I am seeing this as a bullish indicator. If the market starts to slide I have a feeling investors will be dumping a lot more money into gold and silver.

Energy – Oil USO Fund – Energy Stocks XLE Fund

We are seeing a similar pattern in the energy sector. Oil had a nice move higher today while energy stocks sold off.  Stocks are starting to fall out of favor. That being said, I do think I have found an oil play which could rocket higher in the coming days a possible 10 bagger. I will be providing this information in my service Thursday or Friday this week.

Natural Gas – UNG Fund

Natural gas is still in a bear market and trading under a major resistance trend line. This commodity could go either way so I am going to wait for the odds to be more on my side before jumping on board with a long or a short trade.

Mid-Week Gold, Silver, Oil and Nat Gas Conclusion:

The market is starting to look and feel top heavy with many indicators and price action patterns giving cross signals. While the market could continue to rocket higher with new money getting dumped in from average investors because of solid 3rd quarter earnings, we must be cautious by tightening our stops and take some profits off the table. Until we get a short term oversold market condition I am trading very conservatively.

Diamond mining began in the African country of Sierra Leone in the 1930s and since then, diamonds of high quality have been collected in large quantities in this country. Till 1998, some 55 million carats of gem quality diamonds had been reportedly mined in Sierra Leone, amounting to a cost of about 15 million U.S. dollars. In Sierra Leone, as in many other places, diamonds are found in kimberlites, which are deep igneous rocks reaching shallower depths as intrusions (dikes) in pre-existing rocks due to movement ascending magma. In Sierra Leone, kimberlites were first found by miners in Koidu in 1948. diamond-bearing kimberlites were later discovered at Tongo and Panguma using a variety of mining techniques. estimated reserve of two million carats of diamonds are believed to occur at a depth of 300 meters in Koidu. Considerably larger deposits diamond is believed to occur at Tongo, although estimates of kimberlite reserves are subject to speculation.

Diamonds and the Economy of Sierra Leone

Despite large diamond reserves and deposits of other minerals, Sierra Leone remains a poor country due to its continuous history of social disorder and domestic peace problems. Diamond exports play a central role in buoying the economy, which makes about two thirds of country's total export income. The illegal diamond trade in Sierra Leone has been a major cause of bloody conflict and this has led to the appointment of diamonds Sierra Leone as "blood diamonds". An estimated 75,000 people have so far been killed in violence between warring factions, directly or indirectly control, to secure possession of the diamond mines profitable.

The Kimberly Process and the diamond trade

In May 2000, South African government began an international forum called the Kimberley Process to resolve the problem of trade in blood diamonds from Sierra Leone and other African countries like Angola and Congo. The Process Kimberley is a United Nations system mandated to supervise the extraction of diamonds and the supply to prevent them from becoming the cause of conflict and to ensure legitimate trade. The forum allows safe delivery of rough diamonds only to co-participant countries that are part of the Kimberley Process. The implication government, industry, commerce, and civil society, the Kimberley initiative is proving effective in preventing diamonds from Sierra Leone to finance more violence.

The resource groups are arranged and unscrupulous to circumvent the legal barriers and still find ways of infiltrating the diamond centers the world. It may not be possible to halt the trade in conflict diamonds by 100 percent, but with sharp setback in 2004, there is hope for the world that the fighting and genocide which takes place in Africa will soon come to an end.

Please do not support the war effort. Insist on a certification before purchasing a diamond. It will tell carat weight of the stone, color and clarity, flaws, and its origins.
